On a spray gun is a 1.7mm needle size too big for clear coat?

I'm just working on small projects like helmets and I bought a spray gun that is 1.7mm. I have been reading around and people are saying this needle size is more for heavy coats and primers etc. I can still return it and get another, any suggestions on the best needle size? Also any particular brand i can look for? I dont want a piece of sh*t but I dont want to go overboard. I'm thinking 40-110 price range I just want the BANG FOR THE BUCK ya know?
