Need info on looking up family history?

I am intersted in looking up my family tree but i dont know where to start, i know my name obviously and i know my dads name but my mum was adopted but she knows her mums name anyway the question is how do i get up older relatives information on a census without knowing anything about them ?!! I would really appreciate help as i am interested in finding out my family history :-)
