Cavities and numbing of the mouth?

I am freakishly afraid of needles, and shots and I can't stand pain at all. I have nine cavities that I have to get filled, (not all at once) I don't even know howw I got that many but I'm freaking out. and my dentist said that my cavities are all surface cavities so not anywhere between the teeth or anything...is here anything else they could do besides giving me a shot?
