Accuracy of names on Census records?

I believe that I have located my 3x great grandfather, Felix, in an 1860 census record. All of the facts match up on it, except that his name was recorded as Phillis, and his gender as female. How common of a situation was this back then (names, and even genders, being recorded wrong)?
